Ideas for Snowy day play

1. Build a snowman – forage for some natural items that you can use as body parts or go for a walk and build one in the park to make your snowman experience more of a social adventure .

2. Grab the food colouring or washable paint, some brushes and use the snow as a canvas, add a little glitter or sequins and watch it turn into a sparkling magical slush!

3. Footprint hunt – look for as many different types of foot prints and do a little survey, tallying up the different animals and shoes you have seen, supporting children’s learning of similarities and differences, animals and their habitats. From counting or recording data you will support mathematical, investigation skills.

Snowy adventures

4. Go Sledging– find a hill and go for it! Make sure you can stop safely and won’t hit any obstacles, open spaces are best. Why not make a sling sledge from an ikea bag? Layer the bottom with a firm pad of cushions and pop your little one inside. You can cut the larger straps to make a long loose and pull them along. Tried and tested – it works.

5. Snow Angels – perfect for fresh snowfall, lay down and get those lateral star jumps in!

6. Bring out the pots, pans and a few untensils – add some cups and you can make a slush puppy style mud kitchen. For more activity ideas for outdoor play kitchens head to my ‘More than a mud kitchen’ blog

7. Have a blast – digging, scoooping, shovelling the snow.

‘We dig dig dig…’

9. Construction site- Make some bricks and build a wall, igloo or fort from snow. Repurpose those digger trucks at bottom of the toy box and use them to add to the imaginative play. Make a ramp for other transport cars and watch them zoom and crash into the snow. The diggers can be the rescue trucks and SAVE THE DAY!

8. Go on a snowy day adventure in a woodland or park. Make sure you’re all dressed appropriately for the cold, including waterproofing, why not pack a rucksack and take a flask with some hot chocolate and stop for a snack and warming mug of cocoa.

10. Snow Ball fight– There’s no better way to make the most of the snow then heading outside and giving it your best shot. Don’t forget to fire back and dodge the snowballs heading your way! Why not capture some incredible action shots with your camera/GoPro of the whole family having a blast. When inside warm up with a hot drink and sit down together to a photo slideshow of your family fun.

I hope you have lots of snowy day fun!
