The Sweetpea – the perfect plant to support biodiversity in your garden. 🐝
Originating from Sicily in the 1700s, it was recorded by a monk named Franciscus Cupani. 🤓
They found their way to England not long after, and in the Victorian era, everyone fell in love with them; the rest is history. It’s pretty interesting (if you’re into plants); I recommend looking it up. 🌸
These beauties come in many varieties that create a stunning, delicate, and eye-catching display of early climbing flowers, emitting an equally wonderful aroma. They make lovely pollinator plants to support our nectar-loving friends and beautiful posies for classroom decor or gifts. Remember to leave some for our buzzing friends.
Bonus: they have a long flowering life. 🙌🏾
Be warned: despite the name, the pods are not edible.
So plant with caution in children’s gardens.
These beauties can be sown in the greenhouse or indoors from now, sown direct in April/May.
They establish best with root trainers, but the core of a loo roll will do.
I’m trying new varieties this year. I love the calmness of the monochromatic hues of lilac. I’m hoping the children enjoy seeing our Kinder colours come to life in the form of a sweet pea too!
😉
Happy Growing
